Shared Reading- “Share” the reading process with students. (We)
During shared reading, teacher still provides high level of support, while gradually releasing that to the students. The teacher uses this time to model explicitly reading strategies and skills that the students need to learn. The responsibility for reading is “shared” between the teacher and the students, although the teacher reads most of the text. Shared reading is highly complementary to the goals of guided reading. During shared reading, the second phase of the Gradual Release Model students will read aloud in unison from an enlarged text that everyone can see. The children join the teacher or another student, who guides the readers by pointing to each word of the text with a pointer, or laser beam for smartboards. We use big books, or projected texts like poems, songs, classroom news or charts that children have produced through interactive writing. During shared reading we will read, talk and analyze them together. This promotes discussion, problem solving, and critical thinking. During shared reading emerging readers get a chance to behave like readers. Shared reading supports students that are on the verge of reading so that they can enjoy participating in reading whole stories. Many of strategies needed for independent reading can be taught during shared reading.
