Early Phonemic Stage
In the early phonemic stage, students use letters in a systematic way. Their writing is consistently in a directional linear movement, from left to right, across the page. The students use phonics to match letters and sounds, especially consonants in words. Students sound out the words they want to write, estimate how they are spelled, and write the words that way. This is called invented spelling.
