Independent Reading (You)
The goal of Independent Reading is independent practice. The reader independently solves problems while reading for meaning. Independent reading involves students not only in reading books, but in using all written materials in the classroom. Students self-select and independently read appropriate books based on reading level and interest. During this time, students practice reading strategies that were explicitly taught during read aloud, shared reading and guided reading. Students read independently to themselves or to their partners. They may choose books that persuade, or inform or entertain. The self-selecting builds in students’ confidence in decision making process. Students may respond to the text in meaningful ways through writing, discussing, or sketching. During a school day I will provide a variety of text, time and a place for the students to read independently. Students may use all the colorful pointers for big book reading. Anchor charts and reading strategy bookmarks will be helpful during independent reading.
