Pre-Letter Stage or Early Emergent Stage
In early emergent stages of writing, or pre-letter stage of writing development, students begin drawing and noodle writing. Young children at this stage know that their writing carries meaning or tells the story. They also know what their writing represents, even if there is no directionality in writing. This early emergent stage is the beginning of students’ connections between oral language and written language.
It is important for me as a teacher to support and encourage students’ early stages of writing through different forms of writing, drawing and playing.
