Modeled Writing (I): At this first phase of the gradual release of responsibility model, I follow the key aspects of modeled writing by scribing and demonstrating the idea/writing process. I model not only words that go down on paper, or a specific focus of the lesson, but also the thoughts that go with the writing. During write-aloud, I explicitly demonstrate metacognitive processes by verbalizing the internal dialog I use as I write a particular type of text. I also model the selection of topics, skills of gathering and selecting information, writing in a variety of genres, voice, and the ways in which information can be reordered, reoriented, changed, or deleted. I model for students how to name and claim it.
